Es el resultado de medio siglo de experiencia enseñando cirugía en la Emory University School of Medicine y en el Piedmont Hospital, ambos en Atlanta, Georgia. No hubiera podido llevarse a cabo tampoco sin la amplia y variada experiencia de mis ayudantes y las colaboraciones de expertos en otras especialidades. Hemos articulado una serie de “perlas” que configuran toda una “joya” para el residente de cirugía y el cirujano en ejercicio.

Se han incluido datos sobre embriogenia, que nos llevan a una comprensión más rigurosa de la anatomía quirúrgica. Aplicamos la anatomía (orientada quirúrgicamente) haciendo hincapié tanto en su proyección en el quirófano como en las formas de evitar sus posibles complicaciones. Estudiamos las entidades anatómicas “sobre las circunstancias de la práctica”. Presentamos aquellas con las que el cirujano debería estar familiarizado.

Skandalakys

Dr. Skandalakis was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He attended The Westminster Schools and graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS degree in Applied Physics. He attended Emory University School of Medicine and completed his general surgery training at Cook County Hospital and University of Illinois in Chicago. After leaving Chicago, he was on the staff at the Medical College of Georgia in the trauma and critical care department. He then moved to Atlanta where he entered private practice with his father. It was from his father (who was also a professor of anatomy at Emory) that he learned his love of that subject. He has been involved with teaching anatomy to fourth year medical students at Emory University. He is presently a Adjunct Professor of Surgery at Emory. He has numerous publications on anatomy and surgical technique including Journal publications as well as book chapters and books. The fourth edition of his Surgical Anatomy and Technique is soon to be published and previous editions have been translated into many languages. He has a particular interest in hernias.
